Hazelnut Dictionary🔺

Decolonized Hazelnut
I am a farmer, environmental lawyer, foodie, and co-founder of the Turkey-origin, family-run organic hazelnut brand Ağustos/Decolonized Hazelnut that produces hazelnuts with nature-based, earth-friendly, biodiversity-enhancing methods compliant with fair-labor standards.Regenerative agriculture and blockchain are my main areas of interest. Recently, I have been working on the 'Hazelnut Dictionary', which has more than 300 entries that have not yet been published. I dream of sharing the entries of the Hazelnut Dictionary daily in the arena. At the end of my daily posts in the arena, the entries will be turned into NFTs. With the income obtained from here, we will support our work on restoration ecology, especially, but not limited to, the biodiversity of hazelnuts.

Soğlama (Gleaning) Practice Soğlama, a local word for gleaning, is a practice of commoning that involves the collection of leftover hazelnuts from the orchards after commercial harvesting. It is done by economically weaker individuals for extra income - mostly women and people who do not possess their own land. As a customary practice that is also secured by law it provides the members of the local villages and towns with the right to collect the remaining hazelnuts. Since gleaners collect from more than one orchard, their harvest contains a mixture of varieties that is considered below standard as per state and commercial purchase requirements. Within the scope of short fieldwork during harvest time conducted by social scientists, qualitative interviews with gleaners will shed light on the region’s de-facto practice (currently in danger of extinction) of harvesting a diverse array of nuts to uncover and restore the native knowledge of nut varieties.
